Remy Receives Grant for Electric Motors
Remy International, Inc. has been nominated to receive a $60.2 million grant under the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative.” This is a matching funds grant to support U.S. manufacturing of components used to produce hybrid electric and electric vehicles. It will support Remy’s efforts to build the next generation of lower cost, higher performance electric motors and controls.

How Remy will use funds
  • Remy will use the grant funds to expand our product portfolio and production capacity of motor/generators based on our patented High Voltage Hairpin “HVH” technology. This technology has proven successful in the automotive market in GM’s line of Hybrid SUVs and Trucks, as well as Mercedes and BMW Hybrid CUVs.

  • Remy will also expand its world class hybrid testing lab in Anderson, Indiana into a full-line production facility. This new, flexible production line will support the emerging market for electric vehicles in the automotive market as well as a new line of higher output, higher durability products for heavy duty vehicles such as trucks, buses, off-road equipment, and military applications.

  • The grant will also help Remy assist customers in applying these motor/generators to their vehicles. Non-recurring engineering (NRE), tooling, and software for motor application and integration into the vehicle are included in the grant.

What this means for our customers
Higher Performance; Lower Cost

As a result of this grant, our customers will benefit from a much higher performance power system at significantly lower costs.

Performance - Remy’s next generation of products will have superior power density and higher torque density than the motor/generators available on the market today. Simply put, our motors provide more output using far less space and weight. Also, our HVH designs withstand much higher temperatures and higher voltage than traditional technology. This results in a much more durable system. These motors are also matched with high durability inverter/controls in order to provide the highest system efficiency.

Cost - Our new approach will also reduce customer costs. First, Remy is using a standardized platform of motors and controls that will eliminate millions of dollars in tooling and NRE costs associated with contract designs. Second, our new production capacity will employ a flexible manufacturing process capable of producing smaller volumes at lower costs. We view this as a critical capability for reducing current barriers to entry in the emerging hybrid marketplace for both light and heavy duty vehicles.

Customer funding - Finally, our grant application includes funding for customer-specific NRE, tooling, and testing of these motor/control systems. Specifically, we will apply grant funds to customize our products for your application – housings, resolvers, hubs, shafts, bearings, gears, electronics, and application software are all eligible for matching funds.
